Simone is a knowledge sharing specialist. She is a trained social communicator with 13 years' experience in the coordination of international communications projects. Her interest lies in the enhancement of collaboration in institutional settings that contribute to organizational learning and change in agricultural research for development. Simone has been working for CIAT and the CGIAR through ICT-KM Program for 9 years.

Alvarez, Sophie
CIAT, Learning and Knowledge Sharing
Sophie is a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) specialist with training in sustainable development. Working in the Challenge Program on Water and Food and as a consultant for several other CG centers and non-CG programs, Sophie has participated in the development of a participatory planning and impact assessment methodology-the Participatory Impact Pathways Approach. Her main areas of expertise are the facilitation of participatory processes and research related to M&E frameworks and social network analysis. Sophie has been linked with CIAT for 6 years.

Tehelen, Katherine
CIAT, Learning and Knowledge Sharing
Katherine has a Master on Science in Environmental Socioeconomics, and has worked in development projects with young researchers in leadership and food security in Colombia. Additionally, she has gained valuable experience in the areas of financial administration of projects; presentation and analysis of financial data; analysis and management of databases. As part of her work developing and applying the PIPA approach, she has developed valuable skills in the use of monitoring and evaluation methodologies, social network analysis, and participatory-socioeconomic evaluation. Katherine has been working for CIAT for 9 years.

Fernandez, Maria
María worked with the PRGA Program facilitating access to capacity-building in gender and diversity with a focus on multi-stakeholder involvement. She has lectured at the Agricultural University of Wageningen in the Netherlands and is the co-founder of the Institute for Sustainable Smallholder Production Systems and the Master's program "Agrarian Innovation for Rural Development" at the National Agrarian University in Lima. She contributed to the International Assessment on Science and Technology for International Development (IAA STD) and is currently working freelance on rural innovation, gender and participation.

Almekinders, Conny
Wageningen University
Conny Almekinders graduated as crop physiologist from Wageningen University in 1983. From 1983 until 1989 she worked at the International Potato Center (CIP), Peru. At present, she is affiliated to the chairgroup Technology and Agrarian Development, Wageningen University. She deals with the design, implementation and study of participatory approaches in plant breeding and seed production, and agricultural technology development in general.

Margarita has promoted and coordinated the publication in Spanish of Bioversity's handbooks for genebanks, learning modules and guidelines to regenerate germplasm.

Gonzales, Tirso

Tirso has a PhD in Sociology/Rural Sociology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is Peruvian of Aymara descent. His accumulated work experience as scholar, international consultant and activist has allowed him to work closely with indigenous peoples, indigenous agricultures, international agriculture and indigenous-peoples issues in the Americas. Currently he is an assistant professor of Indigenous Studies at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan, Canada). He contributed to the International Assessment on Science and Technology for International Development (IAASTD): Synthesis Report (Traditional and Local Knowledge and Community-based Innovations), SubGlobal Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) Report, and Summary for Decision Makers LAC Report.

Everisto has researched on the Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources (CAMPFIRE), which is a community based natural-resource management program. Everisto has also worked on a number of IWMI's Land and Water Projects in Africa.

Esther is a scientist in CIFOR's Forest and Governance Program. She leads CIFOR's property rights/tenure program and is CIFOR's focal point for gender research. Esther has worked for IFPRI and ICRAF. She holds a PhD in Public Policy from Indiana University and was a fellow in Harvard University's Sustainability Science Program.

Njenga, Mary

Mary is a Kenyan agricultural researcher who specializes in participatory research as applied to rural and urban farming communities. While at Urban Harvest in 2002-2009, she played a significant role of mainstreaming gender in Urban Harvest and CIP's research-for-development projects, as well as in the organizational culture of the two institutions. Mary has authored and co-authored many publications on gender and urban agriculture, bringing out the research, development and policy issues in respect to the needs of women and men including the young and old.

Forough is the Gender expert at the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA). She has an MA in women and gender studies (Makerere University, Uganda) and extensive consulting experience on gender, development and agriculture in the region. Previously, she was gender advisor in MS-Uganda and worked with FAO, DANIDA and NARO as gender specialist.

Martha is a Gender and Development Officer in the Gender, Equity and Rural Employment Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome. She is an economist with a focus on rural development. She works mainly in research and analysis of gender and social inequalities in rural settings in order to provide support to countries in the formulation of gender-sensitive policies for agriculture and food security. She conducts research on agriculture-related subjects, where gender considerations are relevant, such as rural labor, income-generating opportunities, and access to and control over land and other natural resources. She has developed policy-support tools for gender-sensitive policy formulation for agriculture and food security.

Thelma is a Senior Scientist (Socio-economist and Gender Specialist) and Deputy Division Head of Social Sciences Division of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines. She is responsible for mainstreaming gender concerns in strategic, adaptive/participatory research in varietal improvement and crop management, and coordinates the leadership course for Asian women. She has a PhD in Social Ecology from University of Western Sydney, Australia and an MS in Agricultural Economics from the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. Portilla, Melania
Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture
Melania has been Rural Development Specialist at the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) since 2002. She is a social anthropologist with an MSc in Development Studies (ISS, the Netherlands) and is currently pursuing a PhD in Cultural and Social Studies (UCR, Costa Rica). At IICA, she works on gender, culture and social issues within the territorial approach to rural development, and has served in more than 70 technical cooperation missions. She is also a visiting lecturer at the Anthropology Department of UCR and in the Regional Masters Degree Program on Rural Development at the National University (UNA) in Costa Rica. As author, she has published several articles and a book (2005), The Social Management of Rural Territories, Experiences from Maranhao, Brasil.

He contributed to the IAASTD Synthesis Report (Information and communication technology and traditional and local knowledge). His recent book (with Wendy Quarry), Communication for another development: Listening before telling (Zed Books, 2009), emphasizes the preconditions for participatory approaches to take root.

She is a specialist in extension education, having more than 30 years experience in field-level extension and action-research, mainly devoted to research on women in fisheries. Her action-research models on women's empowerment through extension education, gender-mainstreaming in aquaculture, and community-based coastal zone management are well known.
