The 15 CGIAR Centers and their many national partners are together creating a wealth of knowledge that can help rural communities in developing countries build sustainable livelihoods. While all players are doing much to ensure this knowledge is widely shared, formidable obstacles to its uptake and use, and, ultimately, the impact of CGIAR agricultural research, remain.

Rethinking Impact Workshop Key Issues

Six key issues emerged from the Rethinking Impact Workshop (RIW): Understanding the complexity of poverty and change held in Cali, Colombia, March 26–28, 2008. The workshop discussed (1) how agricultural and natural-resources research can be more effective in contributing to solutions for poverty alleviation and improving gender, social inclusion and equity; (2) how its impact can be assessed; and (3) how such research and impact assessment can be brought into the mainstream.

As a contribution to such transformations, this special issue of Agricultural Systems should prove to be a defining event, a marker on a watershed in agricultural research and a signpost to the future of agricultural research and development (R&D).

From September 2006 to February 2007, the PRGA Program underwent its first External Review, which looked at the period from the Program's inception in April 1997 to early 2007. The final report of the External Review Panel was submitted to the CGIAR Science Council in March 2007, the Panel's recommendations, and discussions at the PRGA Program's Advisory Board meetings in October 2006 and February-March 2007, support the Program's proposal to refocus its efforts.
