This study examines the participatory research methodology implemented by a cassava-breeding project in four communities of northeast Brazil over an 8-year period. The study assesses the soundness of the project methodology by testing whether participant farmers were representative of the farming communities where the project was implemented.

Insights into Participatory Video: a handbook for the field, written by PV facilitators Nick and Chris Lunch of Insight, has just appeared. This 125-page booklet is a practical guide to setting up and running PV projects. It draws on experience in PV in several countries, including the pilot PV work carried out by Prolinnova, Compas and Insight in Ghana in December 2004.

A workshop for PRA/PLA practitioners, facilitated by the SSC at the University of Reading, UK, 14–25 August 2006.The workshop will use discussions centered on SSC's experiences in combining participatory and statistical tools in a series of studies concerning poverty and targeting in Southern Africa.

The Africa Rice Congress will bring together scientists, the public, private and civil society organizations (including NGOs) engaged in rice sub-sector development to examine past successes and pave a new direction for rice research and development in Africa for the next decade. The Africa Rice Congress will be organized by the Africa Rice Center (WARDA), under the patronage of the Tanzanian Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives.

The major goal and focus for Phase 2 of the PRGA Program (2003-2007) is to mainstream gender analysis and equitable participatory research to promote learning and change in CG Centers and NARS, so that they can better target the demands of beneficiary groups, particulary poor rural women.The Program's activities and progress in reaching this goal can be read in the latest Annual Report.
