Experimental Agriculture Special Issue on Impact Assessment of Participatory Research and Gender Analysis

Following on from the PRGA Program and CIMMYT co-hosted Impact Assessment Workshop in October 2005, the editor of Experimental Agriculture agreed to publish enhanced versions of a number of the presentations, along with an introductory overview paper. This special issue is scheduled for publication in January 2008.

International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

One of the most common objections to participatory plant breeding (PPB) is that it breaks national laws in terms of release and seed distribution. The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture addresses this issue-countries which ratify the treaty are expected to harmonize their national legislation with the treaty.

The Treaty is now available in the PRGA Program's web-site Recommended Resources section.

Current momentum around women's economic empowerment offers huge scope for bringing about real changes in women's lives. But earning an income or having access to credit cannot be assumed to bring automatic benefits for women. We need to ask critical questions about how increased access to resources can be translated into changes in the strategic choices that women are able to make - at the level of the household and community, as well as at work. What of the terms on which women gain access to resources - are these empowering or exploitative? And what are the impacts of women's greater access to resources on gender relations and norms more broadly?
