One of the most common objections to participatory plant breeding (PPB) is that it breaks national laws in terms of release and seed distribution. The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture addresses this issue-countries which ratify the treaty are expected to harmonize their national legislation with the treaty.

The Treaty is now available in the PRGA Program's web-site Recommended Resources section. To download the full text please click here

Simulating Regional Impacts of Afforestation on Average Annual Streamflow in the Loess Plateau. Forest Ecology and Management. 251, 65-81.

China is facing increased environmental pressures as its economy rapidly develops, with shortages of water potentially limiting development-especially in its dryer north andwest. The highly erodible Loess Plateau in theYellow River Basin is themain source of high sediment loads resulting in poor water quality. Engineering and re-vegetation measures have been (and are being) widely implemented to reduce these environmental problems, but it has since been found that re-vegetation activities result in a decrease of streamflow.
