CIAT hosted the 21st CGIAR Women's Leadership and Management Development Course (June 27 - July 3, 2010). Women from research and administration areas participated in this renowned course. CIAT's participation included Alba Lucia Chavez, Gloria Cecilia Rengifo, Claudia Ximena Garcia and Patricia Biermayr.

The purpose of this course is to reinforce the skills needed to enhance the leadership capacity and managerial effectiveness of women leaders, scientists and professionals who work in the International Research Centers and other international and national organizations. The major skill areas are: sustaining team performance, managing conflict and building alliances to achieve research and business results. Gender and its implications will be a thread woven throughout the course.

Alba Lucia Chavez, Research Associate at CIAT, shared her experience about the course:

"The Women in Leadership Course was a valuable opportunity to interact with wonderful women from around the world. These women managers and fellow scientists are true leaders who re-enforced the following concept: "A leader is a person who is committed to carry out the mission of the venture. To be a leader in an organization is equivalent to be a conductor of a symphony orchestra. The music should be smooth, timely and fun”.

The United Nations General Assembly voted unanimously on 2 July 2010 to create a new entity to accelerate progress in meeting the needs of women and girls worldwide.

The establishment of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women - to be known as UN Women - is a result of years of negotiations between UN Member States and advocacy by the global women's movement. It is part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact.

The financial crisis of 2008-09 has highlighted the need for greater attention to gender, both to address the vulnerability of countries to global shocks and to reach growth and poverty reduction goals. Investments in girls and women need to be scaled up substantially in response to this and other recent crises and, looking ahead, to alleviate demographic stresses and harness demographic opportunities for growth. This is the case for women and girls, especially in low-income countries and low-income households. Their future is closely linked to the economic prospects of these countries and households.

The Authors investigate gender differences in agricultural productivity using data collected from Nigeria and Uganda. Results indicate that lower productivity is persistent from female-owned plots and female-headed households, accounting for a range of socioeconomic variables, agricultural inputs, and crop choices using multivariate Tobit models.
