This report is a background study presented for discussion at the recent Workshop: Repositioning Gender Responsive Participatory Research in Times of Change held at CIAT Headquarters in June 2010. More than 40 experts in Gender Responsive Participatory Research (GRPR) took part during the action oriented event.

The main findings include that most participants had used GRPR at some point in their work, and found it relevant. All women respondents, and most male respondents, thought the use of GRPR enhanced their work in terms of processes, results and impacts. The main obstacles to the continued use of GRPR were perceived to be lack of funding and lack of training and/or training materials.

The Neuchâtel Initiative (NI) is an informal platform of experts specialized in rural and agricultural advisory services that was established 16 years ago. It meets once a year on a voluntary basis in different locations. Based on the collective expertise and the quality of NI products (common frameworks), the initiative has had a certain lead in policy dialogue on agricultural and rural advisory services.

This year the meeting will take place in Viña del Mar, Chile, from November 2 - 5.

Evidence from several experiences with contract farming suggests that, in the longer term, land access may shift from women, who cultivated subsistence crops, to men, who are more likely to sign contracts for cash crops with agribusiness. Pg.6.
