1. Mainstreaming Gender in Agricultural R&D

For over 10 years, the CGIAR Systemwide Program on Participatory Research and Gender Analysis for Technology Development and Institutional Innovation (PRGA Program) has been developing and promoting methods and organizational approaches for gender-sensitive participatory research on plant breeding and on management of crops and natural resources. One of the Program's main aims has been to systematize and mainstream what is being learned worldwide from the integration of gendersensitive participatory research into agricultural research..

The Gender and Agriculture Sourcebook uses empirical evidence to inform policy formulation and program design.2 It provides decision makers and practitioners with practical guidance, not only on how to avoid the pitfalls of gender neutral planning, but on how to capitalize on the extraordinary productive and poverty reducing potential of the woman farmer.

This paper was produced by the Agriculture and Natural Resources Team of the UK Department for International Development (DFID) in collaboration with Steve Wiggins of
the Overseas Development Institute, London.

The paper reflects work in progress towards the development of new guidelines for agricultural policy in DFID. It does not necessarily reflect the views and policy of DFID.

4. Violence Against Women Undermines Poverty Reduction And Development Efforts

The Programme Director of Africa in Democracy and Good Governance, Mr. Edwin Nebolisa, has said that violence against women undermines poverty reduction and development efforts as well as hampers women productivity and health. He added that violence against women also prevents girls from attending school and has been one of the causes for the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS.

5. US’s $50 million contribution will help empower women, says top UN official

The recent announcement by the United States State Department that it will contribute $50 million to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will ring in a new era for women, girls and their families around the world, the head of the agency has said.
